Payson has a new Maverick, and it’s not a gas station! Nestled in the Swiss Village Plaza, a couple of doors north of La Sierra Mexican food, is a hidden gem called The Maverick, a steak and barbeque joint that you won’t regret stopping in for.
It’s located at 806A Hwy 87, and if you blink you might miss it. As you’re driving north on Highway 87 look on the left side of the road just after you pass Forest drive. When you see the sign for “Outcast”–the cool, military themed antique shop next door, you’re just one step away from the steer-horned Maverick sign above the entrance to barbeque heaven. You’ll walk into a wood fire scented foyer wondering why every restaurant doesn’t smell this good.
The menu includes brisket, salads and hamburgers (including a green chili stuffed wonder called the Tijuana Torpedo), fried chicken and ribs, salmon and tuna steaks and smoked fish tacos. Appetizers include chicken wings and egg rolls.
On my first visit I indulged in the 1/2 rack of Maverick’s signature Smoked Barbeque Ribs ($12.95). Thought I’d died and gone to heaven! The ribs were smoky, juicy and fall off the bone tender, and the homemade barbeque sauce was amazingly tasty!
The Maverick at Cadillac Ranch in Payson opens at 11 a.m. and Happy Hour is 3-7 p.m. every day. See you there!
